The first-ever UCSC BBQ was held last Saturday, 20th June 2010 at West Coast Park's Pit No. 2. Some 40-odd enthusiastic UCSC-sians and family (even some ex-UCSC-sians) made the event an unequivocal and 'sizzling' success! (refer to pics of the event). Ages of participants ranged from about 1-year old to ..... uh ..... let's just say, the upper half of the century mark.
There were earlier concerns that the recent damp weather may rain on our parade but not only were the wet conditions contained, but UCSC-sians were actually greeted by brilliant, cool weather that accompanied the event throughout and kept spirits high (with some assistance from wines and beers a-plenty). Parents who did not attend, need not have worried unduly though - The young ones were closely monitored to ensure that their 'spirits' were sustained only by soft drinks, cordials and friendship ..... And there were doctors and lawyers in attendance too.
Food was abundant - There were otahs, chicken, beef, mutton, salmon, satays, corns, sweet potatoes, etc. But as outstanding as the food and drinks were, it was clearly the UCSC spirit that shone bright and clear throughout the event with plenty of heart-warming fellowship, lots of 'ribbing' at each other and (surprise, surprise?) the obligatory squash-talk, especially surrounding UCSC's planned onslaught on the upcoming National Squash League to begin this week in earnest. Who knows? With the kind of 'flame' burning at the BBQ, a 5th COY (Club of the Year) title may just be within reach of a fired-up (there's that 'hot' word again) UCSC squash crew. We last won the coveted COY title in 2007 when UCSC swept every grade it participated in. UCSC also won the COY titles in 2004, 2005 and 2006..... An unprecedented four consecutive titles, represented by the 4-stars on the 2010 Club Tee-shirts.
It was also an excellent opportunity to introduce some of our newer members - The Tong family (Jason, Kevin and little sis, Nicole) who were accompanied by Mom and Dad (Lynn & Raymond) and from about 400 kilometers away in Selangor, Darren Subramaniam, one of Malaysia's most promising young squash gladiators. We welcome you all once again to the UCSC family.
All good things had to come to an end and so did the thoroughly enjoyable UCSC BBQ..... But not before suggestions were mooted for the next event already, perhaps a UCSC Bowling event after our squash warriors have ample practice from their various 'strikes' at worthy opponents during the squash league.
Please view our photo album for some pictures on this sizzling event.
