Whoever quipped that lightning never strikes twice in the same spot, clearly has never played squash in his/her life.

Right after the UCSC'A'nnihilators got annihilated at the Police Academy by the law-enforcers on Tuesday evening, the UCSC 'C'onquerors walked into a similar 'ambush' on Wednesday evening at the same location.

It appeared like business as usual when UCSC's No. 4, Ben Sim went on court against PSA veteran, Chee Seng. It was a fast maturing Ben Sim who quickly and calmly accounted for a very experienced Chee Seng to walk off a comfortable 3-1 winner.

Next up was No.1, Ka Hoe, who was not expected to be troubled but according to eye-witnesses, it was a 'hit-and-run' Gurkha named Tak Kumar, who ignored all speed rules (the cheek of a law-enforcer) and played at an incredibly fast pace with dogged retrievals to surprise Ka Hoe by taking the first set off the immensely talented youngster. Fortunately, all that running in the first set, took its toll and the speed-demon slowed noticeably to allow Ka Hoe into his normal rhythm, playing precision placement squash to romp home 3-1.

With a 2-0 lead in ties, and just when it looked like "chalk up another victory for the 'C'onquerors", the rumbles began. UCSC's Gabriel Goh (playing his first 2010 league match) played credibly but encountered higher squash authority in the form of SSRA Vice President, Raymond Tan, who hit one back for Police by triumphing 3-0 over Gabriel, although the 3rd set did get to deuce.

With everything to play for, reliable Bobby Pang then went on to meet another Gurkha, Ganesh, who played a similar 'hit-and-run' game at a pace which didn't allow Bobby to get into his usual stride to play his deadly cross court drop-shots. 3-1 to the Police player and a count-back win for the Police team by 8 sets to UCSC's 7.

The 'C'onquerors still lead the 'C'-grade table but must now regroup from this unexpected defeat to ensure no more surprises await them in the closing stages of an otherwise successful 2010 campaign...... and oh, watch out for those lightning bolts. These days, they may be man-made.

UCSC (still) Lives & Breathes Squash!
