PJ Open 2011 - Marcus Proves Last Year's Win Was "No Fluke" PDF Print

They say when the going gets tough, the tough gets going.

UCSC's Marcus PHUA proved this cliche to be so true when he played scintillating squash to successfully defend the Petaling Jaya Open crown he first won last year.

In 2010, Marcus had then overcome Malaysia's highly rated Nafzahizam ADNAN  (popularly caled "Zam") during their semi-final. Many had then thought it was a one-off 'fluke' but Marcus proved this to be otherwise when in 2 other tournaments earlier this year, he overcame Zam in both by 3-0 and 3-2.

This year's PJ Open 2011 Final (Sep 22 -25) was another exciting encounter which saw the two finalists almost in lockstep throughout the 5 nail-biting sets which eventually saw Marcus deservedly triumph 14-12, 8-11, 12-14, 11-9, 11-9. The match lasted 1 hour 40 mins and according to Marcus, fitness was the differentiator. Our heartiest congratulations to Marcus!

In his earlier matches, Marcus had to fend off a surprisingly tenacious challenge in the first round from a determined Mark LOW, with Marcus coming back from 2 sets to 1 down before cruising home in the last 2 sets over a tired opponent. Marcus then made short work of Andrew CROSS in the 2nd round, winning in 3 quick straight sets. The 3rd round and first Semi-Final was expected to be a cracker as Marcus faced up to his recent SSRA Men's A Grade Individual conqueror, Vivian RHAMANAN. This was where the going was supposed to get tough. Viv had triumphed 3-0 in an unexpectedly lopsided Singapore event then and was expected to severely test the PJ Open defending champion. It was however, a bit of an anti-climax as Marcus overturned the Singapore result to exact sweet revenge with a 3-0 (5, 8, 6) straight sets win to set up a Final meeting with Zam. This was where the tough got going.

SSRA Individual Graded 2011 - belated updates PDF Print

Apologies for the delay in acknowledging some sterling performances from our UCSC participants in the recently concluded SSRA Individual Graded 2011.

Ladies Premier: Our congratulations to Jerryca TEO for putting up a rousing performance in beating MAO Shi Yuan to emerge 3rd in her event.

Ladies' F: Natalie TAN has been quite a revelation, improving by leaps and bounds this season and her progress resulted in her emerging 3rd in the Ladies' F.

Ladies' Novice: Diminutive Nicole TONG showed she's one to look out for when she made it to the semi-finals before losing to eventual champion, WONG Hui Ling, in an exciting 5-setter, edged out agonisingly only by a narrow 8-11 loss in the rubber. Nicole made amends however in the 3rd/4th placing when she won 3-0 over Audrey CHAN to emerge 3rd.

Men's A: Top-seed, Samuel KANG, 'slipped' up in his quest to win the 2011 Men's premier event. He bowed out without having even played a single game. Skang injured his wrist during an ice-skating outing and had to concede a walk-over to Tim SOH in the 2nd round of the event, having had a 'bye' in the 1st round. 2nd seeded Marcus PHUA lost to Vivian RHAMANAN in their semi-final match but comfortably beat Timothy SOH 3-0 to emerge 3rd.

Men's C: Benedict CHAN justified his top seeding by strolling to the Men's C title without dropping a single game. While this was clearly an awesome result speaking of Ben's incredible progress since he first picked up a squash racket some short years back, special mention must be made of Jerryca TEO's performance to emerge 4th in the Men's C. Denting several men's egos enroute to the semi-final where she lost to dominant Ben, she narrowly lost to LOKE Yan Xuan in the 3rd/4th place play-off.

Men's D: Tyrone ALMEIDA once again demonstrated his fighting spirit when he went one better than his 3rd-seeding by beating 2nd-seeded Jonathan NG 3-1 before he lost to eventual champion, CHUA Man Tong, in the Final to emerge 1st Runner-Up.

Men's E: Jeremy GOH and Jason KYNOCH both put up excellently performances although they lost in the 2nd round and Qtr-Finals respectively. Both UCSC-sians lost narrowly in 5-setters to the same player, 2nd-seeded LIM June Quan, who progressed into the Final. FOO Chuan Kit put up sterling performances to enter the semi-finals before also losing to June Quan. However, Chuan Kit made amends when he eventually emerged 3rd in the event.

Men's F: Several of our players put up great performances despite losing at various stages of this event. '8' was not a lucky number for 4th-seeded Matthew HUI who lost to unseeded Gabriel ANG narrowly in a thrilling 5-setter during the 2nd round. The three sets which Matthew lost, were all by 8-11. The qtr-finals pitted another UCSC-sian young talent, Jason TONG, who also lost narrowly to Gabriel in another 5-setter. Gabriel must have felt that UCSC had an agenda against him when he crossed rackets against yet another UCSC-sian. This time top-seeded Timothy CALDER avenged his UCSC team-mates by beating Gabriel in another close and exciting 5-setter. In the Final, Tim went toe-to-toe against 2nd-seeded Nitin SHARMA. It was a worthy Final between the two top seeds who justified their billing. Tim lost the match in a nail-biting 5-setter which went to deuce in the rubber and won only 13-11 by Nitin. Still, it was a typical gritty performance by the never-say-die Tim.

Congratulations to all UCSC participants who demonstrated the Club spirit and put up such excellent performances.

Singapore Cricket Club and UCSC played its inaugural annual Friendly last Saturday and it was a resounding success!

Played between mainly the Men's A & B with a ladies' match, the results were secondary (the matches were mostly very close, by the way) with friendship and camaraderie far more evident and important.

The final result was that SCC won 9 - 6 overall to win a trophy (named "Beacons of Squash"), kindly sponsored by SCC's Squash segment.

The name of the trophy was in recognition of the youth talent evident in both teams which are amongst the leading lights of Singapore squash in promoting the sport in the nation and the development of young talent.

The match ups were overall, close. These were played to the best of 3 sets x 15 points (PAR scoring) with sudden death if the set gets to 14-all (no deuce).

Individual Results (by sets).... SCC players first:

MAO Shi Yuan lost to Jerryca TEO (1-2)
Vivian RHAMANAN lost to Samuel KANG (1-2)
Udai SINGH lost to Marcus PHUA (0-1, retired due to a glute injury)
Richard HILL beat Darren SUBRAMANIAM (2-0)
Nigel KOH beat PANG Ka Hoe (2-1)
Preshin MANMINDAR beat Phil MOCKRIDGE (2-0)
Bill HATCH beat Jason HO (2-0)
Timothy SOH beat PANG Ka Wai (2-0)
Joannah YUE lost to Joshua WONG (0-2)
Daryl ARNOLD lost to Benedict CHAN (0-2)
James HILL beat Benjamin SIM (2-0)
William OON beat Jonathan SOH (2-1)
Chris PONG beat Michael TAN (2-1)
James McCARTHY lost to Daryle TENG (1-2)
John BETTS beat Bobby PANG (2-0)

During the post-match dinner, so graciously hosted by SCC, UCSC presented a token of appreciation to the hosts.

UCSC Gets Friendly With The Law ...... UCSC vs. PSA (last Sat 6th Aug 2011) PDF Print

UCSC played a friendly inter-club event against our friendly league competitors, Police Sports Association, last Saturday at Singapore Polytechnic.

The friendly but competitive lawmen were bested 1-8 by UCSC's mix of youth and experience in the Men's E and Men's F teams, but what was far more important was the spirit of friendship demonstrated by players of both teams as everyone basked in the wonderful camaraderie.

It is hoped that this will become an annual event following the squash league.

A very warm "Thank You" to our friends from PSA ...... We look forward to the next get-together for some smashing squash.
