A carnival spirit was evident on this Wednesday evening with 3 teams of 4 participating at Hume Park 2, coming from UCSC.
This report comes courtesy of Uncle Francis Chew, Captain of UCSC's 3rd Men's F team, Squash4All (S4A). Uncle Francis wrote:
The 1st game kicked off with Wilson Chu (UCSC 1) playing precocious Bryan Tan (S4A). This match lasted longer than the Men's C match going on in the opposite court with the UCSC F-graders fighting point-for-point. The much younger Bryan brilliantly got 1 set from Wilson but the more mature player with experience on his side, won the match 3-1.
2nd game saw young Matthew up against S4A's Uncle Francis. Fast and furious was the name of the game with Matthew hammering the ball hard and Uncle Francis scrambling all over. Uncle Francis was clearly in toruble after going 2 sets behind. Coming out of the court and very breathless, Uncle Francis was calling "Houston, Houston! We have a problem" No oxygen had been indented for the older warrior. However, the wily and experienced warrior wasn't giving up yet and actually led 8-7 in the 3rd before young Matthew easily took 3 consecutive points as fatigue set in for Uncle Francis, gamely conceding 0-3 for Team 1 to lead by 2 matches to 0.
Young Joshua Chew (Francis Jr.), still a PSLE student, had a great time running about with Brandon Tan. Joshu managed to score a few good points through determined retrievals. Joshua did his best to hit harder and straighter but the older boy, Brandon, set up the game nicely to wrap up proceedings 3-0 to give Team 1 an unassailable 3-0 lead.
In the final match, near ancient Dave Phua played the gentleman's game against another UCSC precocious talent, Ijoe. Casually lobbing the ball to the back of the court, Dave easily won the first game. The second set saw Ijoe switching strategy, hitting harder and giving Uncle dave the run-around ... at least, a bit. With spectators shouting for Uncle Dave to run for Ijoe's shots, Ijoe almost nicked the 2nd set when he pushed Dave to deuce. Experienced Dave however, managed to scrape home oh so narrowly by 16-14. Dave easily wrapped by the 3rd set to win 3-0 over the talented Ijoe and Team 1 won a well-deserved 4-0 but with Squash4All earning everyone's respect for the promise they showed, a force to be reckon with in the years to come.
Overall, it was a great experience for the boys under Uncle Francis' charge. Uncle Francis shared that he needed to shed some spare kilos to be leaner and meaner and play an even better match, next time.
Great fun, great spirit .... UCSC Lives & Breathes Squash!
