It was a weekend of exciting squash fest which saw the JCC Squash Invitational 2010 take place from Fri 5th Nov through to Sunday 7th Nov.
There were some eye-openers in many of the matches and upsets galore. It bodes well for the future of Singapore squash.
The 3rd/4th placing between Darren Subramaniam and Pang Ka Hoe started just moments before the Final between Samuel Kang and Marcus Phua overlapped. Some spectators probably expanded as much energy as the players when they traversed constantly between the two exciting matches.
In the 3rd/4th placing event, Darren strolled to an easy 11-2 win and it looked like Ka Hoe was about to be steam-rolled. But typical of the talented younger youngster, he came up with some scintillating shots to give Darren some pause for a cause when Ka Hoe snuck home the 2nd set by 11-9. It was close in the 3rd and 4th sets with Darren asserting his superiority to edge home by 11-9, 11-7 to win 3-1 overall and emerge 3rd overall in the event.
In the Final, it was a mouth-watering match-up between two immensely talented Singapore national players. Exciting shot-making from Marcus, stoic discipline before pin-point tuck-aways from Samuel and exciting athletic retrievals from both players, gave the packed audience "value for money" (even though entry was FREE). The first match didn't prepare the crowd for what was to come when Marcus eased into a 11-5 first set win. Samuel then dug in and came away a 11-9 winner in the second. Then both players kept spectators on the edge of their seats (for those sitting especially) with superb atheleticism and outrageous winners after energy-sapping rallies. Marcus sealed victory with a superb cross-court smash volley nick which a fully stretched Samuel just failed to reach. With this victory, Marcus has won the title for the 3rd consecutive time since the inaugural event in 2008.
Kudos to JCC resident-coach & chief UCSC coach Simon Yang, JCC convenor, Robin Soh, and JCC/UCSC member, Bobby Pang, for putting together such a hugely successful event. Congratulations!

Samuel Kang lost narrowly to Shahril is his semi-final and then again narrowly to Nafzahizam in 3rd/4th placing.
Malaysian UCSC-sian, Jadeleen Lee (only 14 years old), finished 1st runner-up in the Women's Div Two event, beating 2nd seed, Zulhijah Azan in the semi-final before succumbing to international and top seed, Siti Munirah Jusoh, in the Final.
Finally, loyal long-time Malaysian UCSC-sian, Florence Tan, captured the Plate title of the Women's Div Two.
Our heartiest congratulations to the above UCSC-sians.

Week No. 2 has seen only one complete set of results where Shaolin Squashers unleashed some fine squash kung-fu to K.O. The Underdogs by 4-1. Other matches were incomplete although two have confirmed team wins with unassailable leads despite having played a match short each. B'orn '2' Win is leading Losers Buy Drinks by 3-1 with Brian Chang yet to play Michael Crowe and B4 The Rest leading Winners Take All by the same, 3-1 margin with Kelvin Kan yet to play Michael Tan.
Participants are reminded of two things:
1) All uncompleted matches must be played this week;
2) Week No.3 this Saturday will see matches start from 1.00pm-5.00pm instead of from 2.00pm-6.00pm. This is to faciliate the AGM which we will hope to start on time at 6.30pm. Please lend your full support.
Good luck for the remaining matches and happy squashing!
