The Milo International All-Star held in KL this year received participation from 12 countries with total of around 450 players. As expected the tournament witnessed many top aspiring junior players from individual countries vying not only for the top honours but also for the top prize money of US$1,200. Among the entries were 9 juniors from UCSC. Below are a couple of notable performance from our juniors.
Darren Subramanium who is among one of Malaysia top juniors, would have justifed a higher seedings if not for his decision to study in Singapore this year, was given only a 9/16th seeding. The cut-back on training as a result of his studies did not stop Darren from creating many upsets by beating Mohd Addeen (4th) and Ryosei Kobayashi (5th) to reach the semi-finals against 1st seed Ali Bokhri from Pakistan. Bokhri who did not face any resistance until then was again looking for another easy win. Darren breaming with confidence before the match not only gave Bokhri a stiff resistance but appeared to be the better of the two and was in control for the most part the match. He was in the lead 9-7 and was about to wrap up the match in the 4th game when a lapse of concentration and wrong choice of shots allowed Bokhri's to take the next 3 pts. The 5th game was a close tit-for-tat encounter from the start until 8-8 where again Bokhri suddenly found the 3 crucial pts in succession to steal the match. Darren can hold his head high for putting up such a inspiring performance. He went on to beat Vrishab Kotian from India for the 3rd place comfortably.
Similarly, Kahoe who was seeded 9/16th beat Nick Ally ( seeded 2nd) in the 4th round. In the quarters-finals, Kahoe faced Yoveineshan (7th) whom he had just beaten comfortably a month ago in Penang. This time however Yoveineshan was fearless and rose to the occasion where he played an impossible attacking game that was error-free while Kahoe's game was error proned. Kahoe was tensed and under tremendous pressure to win (afterall, everyone was expecting a repeat of an easy win). It was uncharacteristic of Kahoe to make that multiple errors with the balls hitting the tin in succession. But credit must go to Yoveineshan who managed to constantly put Kahoe under pressure throughout. Fortunately, Kahoe found his rhythm and regain the momentum in the next 2 days by beating Madhav Dhinga (India) and Darren Chan (M'sia) to finish a respectable 5th place.
Other notable performance were from Benedict Chan whose game improved by leaps and bounds managed a respectable performance by reaching the final of the Special Plate. Nicole Tong showed much potential by winning the Special Plate event despite her maiden appearance. Overall the rest of our juniors put up a great performance matching the top 16 players in almost all categories.
