Well, the Thomson CSC Squash Invitational 2010 has seen new champions emerged, but before we get to reveal them, here are the results of the semi-finals played last Friday.

In the bottom half of the draw, Englishman and Singapore Permanent Resident, Phil MOCKRIDGE had a comfortable victory over talented Woody THAM (former Malaysian state junior player who now plays for New Pioneers), despite giving away a 7-point handicap and age handicap of..... oh, never mind that (it's embarrassing).
In the upper half of the draw, the two semi-finalists there, both UCSC-sians, had a battle royal. Evergreen Francis WONG had an epic battle with the younger Jonathan CHEU (another former Malaysian state junior player). On Par on points-handicap but with Francis giving away an unmentionable age handicap, the somewhat .... uh, let's say more 'experienced' Francis, emerged the fresher of the two after the energy-sapping 3-setter, and also the winner. Rumor has it that the Singapore Sports Council and the Singapore Medical Council have requested for blood samples from Francis to determine his true age, having been a finalist in this event for most of the past 14 years that the event has been held!  Most of us have our suspicions that Francis may have arrived on earth in a rocket from the planet, Krypton.

In the Ladies' Semi-Finals, Rachel CHOE beat Jia Yi to set up a Final meeting with Wan Ning, conqueror of LIM Choon Cheng.

In the Men's Final on Saturday, the tenacious Englishman put up a 'sterling' and stirring performance to beat Uncle Francis in straight sets to emerge the new Men's champion of the Thomson CSC Squash Invitational 2010.  Maybe those blood tests on Francis can be put on hold for a while (until next year's Final). We're watching you very closely, Francis!

The new Ladies' champion is Rachel CHOE who beat Wan Ning in the ladies' Final.

In the Special Events finals, LAU Tian Liang beat an ever-game Jeremy KANG to win the Men's event, while Ruchi MITTAL beat  Torrin PANNICKER in the other special event.

Spectators were then treated to a squash spectacular when Singapore national players, Marcus PHUA and Samuel KANG, put on an exhibiton match. It was anything but an exhibition as both young men threw their all into the match which had everything.... Speed, power, delicate drop-shots, razor-sharp anticipation, lightning retrievals, volley kills, long energy-sapping rallies.... The match was truly breath-taking! And the scores? A thrilling 5-setter, the rubber going to 13-11 and Marcus PHUA finishing as the exhausted victor .... But with both UCSC gladiators and the game of squash emerging the true winners. It couldn't have been better choreographed, if it had been planned.  WELL DONE, LADS!

With that, the curtains came down on another successfully-run Thomson CSC event ..... Kudos to the dedicated organzing committee.

The tired but satisfied participants now move on to prepare for the exciting battles ahead during the pulsating National Squash League 2010, to run from end-February till end-May.
