The Thomson CSC Squash Invitational 2011 has reached the stage where the boys should be separated from the men! The results? We have 2 men in the Plate Final and a mix in the Open Final!!!! In last evening's Plate semi-finals, experience triumped over youth in one semi-final while a premature retirement occurred in the other. Lau Tian Liang's patient experience triumped over Wilson Chu's youthful exuberance while in the other semi-final, Dr Woffles Wu retired after battling to a narrow win in the first set despite the handicap odds against him, only to 'retire' from the exertion in the second. It will be an interesting Final tomorrow which will pit Dave's even greater experience and a useful handicap advantage over the 'younger' Lau's nippiness on court. Good luck, 'lads'. In the Open event, Jason Ho's fine form and quicksilver moves on court overcame 2010 Open champion, Phil Mockridge. It was clearly Jason in the first and while closer in the second set, it was too little, too late to overcome the 'Ho't performance from Jason. In the other semi-final, two oldies but goodies battled out an interesting match. Simon Yang come back from a first game loss to so very narrowly edge out evergreen opponent, Francis Wong, by 1 point in the next set to even the match, then assert his authority to win the 3rd and final set with conviction. Perhaps it was Simon's 'streamline physique' (read 'receding hairline') which gave him that 'cutting' edge. This will be the first Final in a long while which will not feature the effervescent Francis Wong. Tomorrow's Open Final will feature Youth vs. Experience as the mercurial Jason Ho takes on the immenseful experienced and wily Simon 'Young'? The 3rd and 4th placing in the Open event will be between 2010 Finalists, Phil Mockridge and Francis Wong. The Finals occasion will be graced by MP of Bishan - Toa Payoh GRC, Mr. Hri Kumar Nair.
