As we enter the second week of our 2010 NSL journey, the roars are getting louder from our league warriors. Yesterday, I put out an email on the victories registered by our D.E. A.(r) players: A won 2-2 on countback, D won 3-1 and E, resounding 4-0 winners. The latest to leave opponents in their wake: were the Men's C and once again, the Men's F Team 2. UCSC's 'C'onquerors came, saw and 'C'onquered with a deafening 4-0 win over SCC's Team 2. Two of our brightest young stars, playing at No. 2 and 4, PANG Ka Wai and Benjamin SIM respectivley, went on court simultaneously and competed with each other to see who would finish their opponents first. Both registered 3-0 over their SCC opponents, Ka Wai over Nicholas LEONG while Benjamin accounted for an ex-UCSC player, Hashita ABEYSEKERA. Their missions accomplished, they sat back to enjoy seeing the next two 'C'onquerors drop a set each on their way to similar 3-1 victory score-lines. A well-toned and fit Mark WONG was slow off the mark and dropped the first game to SCC Captain, Thaddeus TSANG but built up momentum to storm home in the next 3 sets. The much-awaited match between both teams' No. 1s, our own PANG Ka Hoe and SCC's William OON, provided a fabulous squash exhibition between two of Singapore's finest juniors. Ka Hoe was the superior player on the night and won comfortably but not before taking his foot off the pedal in the 2nd game just briefly to allow a glimmer of hope for William. However, stepping back on the gas pedal, Ka Hoe wrapped up proceedings with a comprehensive 3-1 win. The Men's F Team 2 once again, exemplified their 'F'ighters tag with another nail-biting 2-2 win on countback by 9 sets to 7 over SCC's Team 1. Three of the four SCC players were over 6 feet tall! Brandon TAN stepped into court and showed some rustiness from competitive absenteeism. Brandon gave his all but was beaten 1-3 by his tall, powerful opponent who was also a tennis player. Next on court was Matthew HUI who wore the 'David' tag vs. his 'Goliath' opponent and like the Biblical 'David', came away a 3-1 winner over the bigger man. That's 2 out of 2 for the season so far, Matty.... Way to go! The Tong brothers, Jason and Kevin, then stepped in simultaneously to do battle. Big brother, Jason, had the good fortune of facing the only SCC opponent who was under 6-feet and quickly despatched the older player 3-0. But winning the most cheers and hearts must have been little Kevin who, if Matthew was 'David', Kevin must have been one of the Hobbits in the Lord of the Ring series. His 6-feet tall opponent, a lanky badminton player, uttered, "Oh, my God" when he saw Kevin, less than half his size and one-third his age, and made reference to upholding his dignity against pint-sized Kevin. When the match was finally over however, those present must have felt that 10-year old Kevin walked off the court looking the same height as his opponent, losing only narrowly by a 2-3 margin. Because of his opponent's height, Kevin was advised by his team-mates to keep his shorts low and to the front and how he executed that strategy! We're proud of you, Kevin. What a display, UCSC 'F'ighters! Well done. The 'B'ombers go into action again tonight, playing at home (SLF) against SCC. Supporters, warmly welcome! UCSC Lives & Breathes Squash! |
